Project Description

The project includes the upgrading of Section 13 of the R63 between from Fort Beaufort (km 35.77) and Alice (km 58.86). The upgrade included the safety and visibility improvements of all intersections along the route with turning lanes and climbing lanes introduced on along the route. 7 Local community roads were upgraded during the projects as part of the Community Development Project.
A portion of the contract runs through the Main Road in Fort Beaufort, Campbell Street. The water, sewer and stormwater networks were fully upgraded, alongside upgrades to all internal intersections with new traffic signalisation installed and new streetlights. A new pavement structure was built with an approximately 42 000m2 of Asphalt wearing course.
The existing Kat the Brak River Bridges were widened. Kwatinidubu and Kwezana Rail bridges were demolished and reconstructed. The Mxelo River bridge was also re-built to accommodate the new horizontal alignment. 9 major cast in-situ culverts and 3 minor cast in-situ culverts, 3 pre-cast SATS box culverts were constructed as well as fifty eight prefabricated culvert crossings.
Major horizontal and vertical improvements were made to the alignments. Earthworks comprised approximately 700 000m3 of cut to fill/borrow to fill operations; 125 000m3 cut to spoil and 125 000m3 removal of unsuitable material. 360 000m3 of bulk blasting was completed with 130 000m3 of insitu blasting.

Construction work on the project commenced on the 5th of October 2022 and the Completion date is expected to be 4th of October 2023.

Major Quantities included the following:

  • 700 000m3 of cut to fill/borrow to fill operations
  • 125 000m3 cut to spoil
  • 125 000m3 removal of unsuitable material
  • 360 000m3 of bulk blasting with 130 000m3 of insitu blasting.
  • 3 pre-cast SATS box culverts were constructed as well as fifty eight prefabricated culvert crossings.
  • 9 major cast in-situ culverts and 3 minor cast in-situ culverts
  • The existing Kat the Brak River Bridges were widened.
  • Kwatinidubu and Kwezana Rail bridges were demolished and reconstructed.
