Project Description

UPGRADING TO A SURFACE STANDARD PORTION OF ROAD DR08034 –N2
TO R61 VIA CLARKBURY +/- 20KM PHASE 1

The first phase of Road DR08034 is a 20km road upgrade from a gravel road to a surfaced road, connecting the National Road N2 near Idutywa to the Provincial Road R61 via Clarkebury. The upgrade includes improved horizontal, vertical alignments and improved road safety features such as road intersections and pedestrian walkways.

The project also includes improved drainage. With the construction of over 60 prefabricated culverts, 2 prefabricated 1200X1200 box culverts and 3 major cast insitu culverts. The existing Bolotwa causeway is being replaced with construction of a new River Bridge, Bolotwa Bridge.

Earthworks comprise of approximately 150 000m3 of fill operations, 65 000 of cut to spoil operations and approximately 150 000m3 of insitu blasting. The upgrade on the pavement layers includes a 150mm thick chemically stabilised gravel subbase layer and a 125mm G3 crushed stone base, with a 20mm Cape Seal.

Major Quantities include:

  • 150 000m3 of cut/borrow to fill operations.
  • 65 000m3 of cut to spoil operations.
  • 150 000m3 of insitu blasting
  • Over 10 000m of subsoil drainage
  • Over 10 000m of concrete side drains.
  • 2 pre-cast SATS box culverts
  • 68 prefabricated stormwater crossings.
  • 3 major cast insitu culverts
  • Construction of a new River Bridge.

The construction of the 20km road network commenced on the 22nd of April 2025 and is expected to be completed by April 2028.
